Ghost Busters! Tips to Conducting Your Own Ghost Bust

By Alex Woomer, Reporter

For hundreds of years there have been strange superstitions that there are paranormal spirits that roam and haunt the living world. These spirits are today referred to as ghosts. And although Casper was a friendly ghost, Dave Juliano explains on ghosthunting101.com that there are more than just the nice, accommodating ghosts like Casper.

According to Juliano, there are two main types of spirits. One of them is the spirit of a past human person, who is likely unaware that he or she is dead at all. These are usually not dangerous because they reflect the life that they lived when they were alive. These make up 95% of the “ghost” population. The other type is the demonic spirits. These are the ones that you should watch out for, but it is an unlikely event that you would encounter one of these on your first ghost hunt since they are more rare.

Ghost hunting can be very risky, so there is some essential equipment that you should and must have when hunting. A video camera is very important on your hunt so that there is documented evidence of your exhilarating search. Also, you will need a flash light with extra batteries since your hunt will most likely take place during the night. Just to be safe, a first aid kit might be a great idea to have in case an accident occurs.

Here are some steps to conducting a successful indoor or outdoor ghost search. First, you should locate a site that is convenient for you and is a promising location for ghost such as an old abandoned house next to a railroad or an aged cemetery. Go to the site during the day and walk around the premises making yourself familiar with the place so that you are more comfortable walking around the location in the dark. After you arrive at the scene at dusk and begin preparing for the hunt. Turn on your video camera and make sure someone is always recording in the event that you do encounter a spirit. Be sure to take extra precaution when walking in the dark. Also, never wander off alone. Use the buddy system and stay together.

If in fact you feel that your crew is not alone, test your senses and surroundings to confirm whether or not you are in the presence of a spirit.
Five simple signs a ghost is somewhere close:
1. If there is a sudden chill or a surge/drop in temperature.
2. If a strong wind abruptly starts and stops.
3. The hair on the back of your neck stands up.
4. If you heard weird noises
5. If you see a sudden movement or figure that you cannot identify as an actual concrete creature.

Do not get depressed if on your first ghost hunt you do not come across an actual spirit. If you keep with it, eventually you will find what you are hunting for. Ghost hunting is supposed to be a fun and invigorating event that is sure to get your blood pumping long after the hunt is done.
