Slushies, soft serve, limeades and other frozen treats are among many treats the drive through diner Sonic sells. Early this year, there was a new Sonic restaurant built right next to Chic-fil-a and Wal-Mart off of six and fifty. The other Sonic restaurant, located on North Avenue, never attracted the crowds this new Sonic has; it seemed to be the hit of the summer.
Herds of teens would cram into each other’s car and head to Sonic, no matter what time of day. This particular Sonic stays open until midnight and even then it still seems to be crammed with customers. But now many wonder, why did Sonic become popular this summer?
Sonic is known for its Happy Hours. From two to four p.m. everyday, drinks, slushies, and soft drinks are half price. This particularly seemed to draw teens of many different ages into the parking lot. The spots on either side would be filled at this time and the drive through backed up to the street with everyone’s’ cars. The drinks are much cheaper than other fast food restaurants making it a convenient place to go.
Sonic also is a very friendly and safe environment. The happy waiters and waitresses skate out in their poodle skirts and deliver your food or drinks, whether you are in your cars in a parking space or in the center console. The center of Sonic has many benches to suit a large amount of people and lights overhead. Sonic is a perfect place to meet up with friends after things such as football games, sports events, or to just have a place to go to catch up with a friend, and have a drink. Sonic is an ideal hang out spot for many ages. It almost seems as if it is a bar for teenagers, but safe and clean.
Anytime one would roll into the Sonic parking lot, they were almost bound to see someone they knew. It has become an expectation to see someone you know when attending the Sonic Diner. It turned out to be an expectation that one would run into at least someone they knew, and made it easy to talk if you haven’t seen each other for the length of the summer.
Sonic has become a major hit of the 2009 summer. It was close and convenient, affordable, and a good place to hang with friends. Sonic hasn’t faded either, but we will see what happens once winter comes.
