In the 2008-2009 school year we’ve seen many changes. One change includes the popularity of our Poms team. “I think we’ve been getting more attention this year because of our new coach and bigger team. Rachel Nock informs, “There was only one girl that switched from cheerleading to Poms this season.”
Poms has always been a fun tradition here at school. The season began shortly after the April tryouts. Practice with the new team started over the summer. The season ends February 20th, on the last basketball game.
Team bonding also takes up a big amount of time on the Poms team. “Since we can’t talk much at practice, we started hanging out at someone’s house or having a pool party or throwing a team dinner,” Nock said.
Being a part of the Poms team takes a lot of dedication and commitment, since they dance for wrestling, basketball and football. Not to mention the practice that they have three times a week for two hours and performing sometimes three times in one weekend.
With seventeen girls on the team there is some drama that unfortunately conflicted with the coaches. Lizzie England coached half the season and then turned it over to Heather Kendall. It was England’s first year coaching, and being on the team two years ago made it hard to switch over to head coach. With Kendall now as the head coach, (she was assistant before Lizzie passed it to her) it’s her fourth year coaching and she’s doing great adjusting.
You can see the Poms team at any of the basketball games or wrestling matches, they perform at half time for basketball and for wrestling, before Varsity starts and once JV is over.
