Fruita's Own Miller Chooses to Stay Local for College

by Chad Fox, Reporter

Fruita Monument High School Senior Tight End Scott Miller has decided to stay in Grand Junction for at least another 4 years. Miller, who was a key part of the Wildcat’s passing game this season, will stay at the same position for the Mavericks. He said Mesa was an easy choice, following another Fruita standout athlete in Rex Clemons, who in the fall also choose Mesa State to continue to play baseball. Miller’s mother, Stacey Tonozzi, was thrilled that her son will stay close so she and the rest of the family can watch him progress even more. Miller’s father, Mark Miller, was also very happy with his son’s decision to play for the Mavericks. “I think it’s great! It’s nice for him to go through the process and decide where he wants to play. We are happy, and hope he is too.” Scott was also being recruited by a few other football programs, including Montana State University and Western State in Gunnison. His selling point on the Mav’s was the coaching staff though. “It’s just a good program, good opportunity, and a good coaching staff,” added Miller after signing his letter of intent. Miller will be following current tight end Maurice Manley’s footsteps, which will be interesting to watch. It has not been decided whether or not he will red-shirt his freshman year or not. Scott shouldn’t have to much of a problem though, having also played basketball for Fruita and have a family full of athletes, including cousin Garrett Tonozzi, the world’s 5th ranked bull rider. Regardless of what happens, the next 4 years are going to be fun to watch.
